ReDevelopment Symposium 2017

This one day Redevelopment Symposium features Minnesota subject matter experts in the community development field who will examine the importance, value, and procedures for redevelopment initiatives in a community through a series of speaker led sessions.

 

The event is comprised of five interrelated sessions that address the process of redevelopment in Minnesota including the financing tools and legal requirements necessary for a redevelopment project to come to fruition.  The sessions will also feature numerous examples from the Twin Cities region that exemplify how to successfully implement redevelopment.

9:00am Welcome and Redevelopment Symposium Kick-Off
9:15am Attracting Development – Local Leadership & Vision
The purpose of this session is to kick off the symposium with a discussion of how to help local officials envision redevelopment initiatives and work with developers. Discussion will include: 1. An overview of critical elements of the redevelopment process; 2. Identification of tools to help communities relate community redevelopment goals with the realities of the marketplace, including the role of the market study; 3. How to work with local officials about the importance of setting the vision, and 4. How to facilitate development and work with developers. Speakers: Ehlers (Woodbury) & Springsted (Bloomington)
10:15am Getting the Deal Done - Financing & Revelopment Requirements
The purpose of this session is to explore what financial tools work best, how to finance a redevelopment, and explore role of the development review process on the financial success of the redevelopment. 11:45am Working Lunch – Financing Update from Minnesota Housing
Margaret Kaplan, Community Development Director for Minnesota Housing, will provide an update on the latest funding sources and opportunities in 2018 and beyond.
12:30pm Getting the Deal Done – Legal Nuts & Bolts
The purpose of this session is to provide an overview of the legal requirements of redevelopment law in Minnesota including redevelopment planning, acquisition, relocation, and documentation of blighted properties. Speaker: Andy Pratt, Attorney, Eckberg Lammers PC
2:00pm Putting the Redevelopment Puzzle Together – Recent Case Study
Through a case study, the session will describe the effort to redevelop critical areas. Speaker: Barbara Dacy, Melissa Taphorn, Washington County CDA
